Dear David
It has been over a month since we last met in Zhuhai. During the Zhuhai meeting, you and the officers of the “RPSL China Club” insisted that an organization must be established before any activities could be organized, and once again a list of the same officers was proposed, as before. The pretext that nothing could be done without an organization and an eagerness to “unify” the finance and activities with these same officers directly contravenes your written undertaking to Council in London that the “RPSL China Club” no longer exists.
The fact that the China Regional Meetings have been successfully organized and that the Asian Philatelist, an RPSL Chinese publication, has been published regularly during the past three years testifies that a new organization is not a pre-condition to the success of our activities in China.
What is needed is enthusiasm to promote philately through people giving their best without seeking positions or other rewards. The pretext that nothing can be done without an organization is groundless.
You already have an established reputation among philatelists, so why should we allow RPSL to be a place for office-seekers? The claim that these officers are using the RPSL only for advancing China's development (for which, read their own advancement) and are not abiding by the rules of the RPSL is absurd. If so, what are these rules for?
During the Zhuhai meeting, I drew attention to the fact that much of the research in Chinese philately was made by foreigners, and that the Chinese contribution to Chinese philately has been limited, not least in philatelic exhibitions.
Now that more Chinese rarities are returning to China, it is both fitting and proper that we organize and facilitate our research and publication, putting to good use the Chinese archives which are little known to foreign researchers, thus raising this research to a higher level. In this way, we will have more influence in Chinese philately and could fulfill the aspirations of generations of Chinese philatelists since M D Chow.
Positive competition is good. RPSL is a world-class philatelic research organization, and an ideal platform for Chinese philatelists to introduce their research findings to a world-class audience. I am quite sure that we will receive solid support from the Presidents and Council of the RPSL, and I look forward to working together with you towards the internationalization of Chinese philatelic studies.
I regret that I could not answer the questions raised in Zhuhai by these officers one by one, and I therefore take the opportunity of sharing this letter with a wider audience to solicit positive feedback.
Best regards
Danny
