Recently I just learned a poem from the following Baidu website, and I am deeply impressed by the poem written by Yu Guang Zhong (余光中)who is from Taiwan, China.
When I was young, my homesickness was a small stamp, I was here,my mother was there.
After growing up, my homesickness was a narrow ticket, I was here,my bride was there.
Later, my homesickness was a little tomb, I was outside,my mother was inside.
And now, my homesickness is a shallow strait, I am here, the mainland is there.
I try to translate, maybe it is not original meaning because never I have thought my homesickness in English.
The homesickness is an endless line in my heart:
It’s a family line: as a son, worrying about my parents
It’s a time line: in my middle age, recalling my childhood
It’s a distance line: living in the South Hemisphere, missing my hometown far away
It’s a connecting line: no matter where being, my heart tied to China
It’s a line in my dreams, often bringing me home to be with my family and taking me back to my childhood.
Excellent! This is my first time to read such a good poem written by a member of Hua You Wang. It would be greatly appreciated if you or someone can translate it into English.
