U.S.A. 1940 cover from San Francisco, Calif. to Canton Island, South Pacific. This cover has a "per S.S.Monterey via Honolulu" directional. This would have been rare cover for the times, as there were only 50 residents on Canton island at the time. HOWEVER!! This cover somehow was missent to CANTON CHINA!! The last time I checked, CANTON CHINA was not a island. Very nice CANTON roller cancel front and back. Then a HONG KONG PASSED CENSOR 9 in green on front. Backstamp transit receivers show HONG KONG 9 AU 1940, APIA SAMOA 26 SP 1940, then CANTON ISLAND OCT 23, 1940. Wow what a trip, east to west. then west to east! NOTE: This cover has a vert. fold that affects one 3 cent Tomas Jefferson stamp.
