Interasia lot description:
Taiwan (Customs Post), 1884 (25 Nov.) Hong Kong Q.V. 1c. postal stationery card datelined "Takow, 24 Novbr 1884" to Friedrich Ruhstrat in Oldenburg, Germany, showing "Customs/Takow" double-ring origin d.s. of "Nov 25 84" in red, and uprated with Hong Kong 2c., cancelled by "A/Amoy" c.d.s. (1.12), "Hong Kong/A" transit c.d.s. (3.12) on reverse. Ernst writes that he has the possibility of sending a letter, since a warship is arriving from Amoy to assess the situation. The mails appeared to be blocked on board another warship, which was to be relieved by one of their warships armed with cannons, and was at present off Anping. This ship had just passed by Tamsui and was due at Takow at any moment. Eight days had passed since he last sent a letter by a French warship, and he also sent another letter by a Chinese junk for Amoy. The situation was calm at present, and he hoped news of peace would arrive soon, along with the conclusion of the blockade. Very fine and an important account of the means of communicating with the outside world during the hostilities.
Estimate HK$ 180,000 - 220,000
